Old Izaak™ Ale
Traditional Ale From the North of England
Old Izaak™ is a traditional English ale brewed by Whim Ales of Derbyshire. Founded in 1990 this picturesque micro-brewery utilising old stone farm buildings is set among the limestone hills of the English Peak District. The brewery takes its name from the horse powered device, "The Whim", which was used to raise and lower miners from the old lead mines which operated in the locality many years ago.
This district is renowned for its natural scenic beauty, and the river Dove, which runs close by the brewery, was fished by Dr. Izaak Walton in the 17th century. Izaak Walton wrote what is believed to be the first book on the art and sport of rod fishing, The Compleat Angler, and this tasty ale is named for him.
Old Izaak™ is brewed with Northdown hops for both aroma and bitterness, and a craftsmans blend of pale, crystal and black malts. Deep reddish amber in color, it has a thick creamy head and delightful hop aroma. On the palate, it is predominantly dry, though the malt character is evident in flavor and body, and it finishes with a long-lasting and pleasant hop bitterness.
Like all English ales, it is best served at 50-55° F. At 5% abv it's not exactly a "session" beer, but its drinkability does encourage multiple pints—at home, or with a designated driver. Very quaffable on its own, it also pairs nicely with a variety of heartier foods. Some suggested food pairings.
